English:
As a real Dutchman you cannot keep us from using the bike, even in Oslo. There is some
kind of bike borrowing plan in the centre here in Oslo, called “Oslo bysykler”,
which only costs €13 a year. You register for a bike-pass, scan your pass at a
special bike rack and you can borrow a bike. Now you can use it everywhere,
only you have to return it to the same bike rack or another in the centre
(there are around 75 of them) within 3 hours. And there is such a bike rack
just around the corner of my apartment. Lailai ordered a bike pass for me and
since this one has not arrived yet, I can use hers temporarily, thank you
Lailai! So, how is biking in Oslo?
A bit
scary. There are few cycling paths (as in: none), you can both bike on the
cycle paths as on the road and suddenly I bumped into a tunnel, that really
looked like it was not meant for bikes. Though my neighbour on the bike just
biked into it, I decided to turn around. On the other hand: it is actually
quite okay to bike. I get the feeling that the drivers mention the cyclists,
though you should not behave on the bike like I would in Amsterdam. That will be
too dangerous. And three: hills. Cycling up in first gear, cycling downhill
with 40 km/h. Conclusion: just fine! And it is a lot cheaper than using the public
transport. And what do I think of the “Bysykler”-system here? Also fine, as
long as it works how it should work. That’s how I had to wait for 40 minutes,
in the rain (under an umbrella), for a car from the company to fix a problem I
had: I had returned my bike properly, but it seemed to be unregistered so I
couldn’t borrow another one. I was glad they fixed it. But, the bike is a good
way to discover Oslo.
Next to
that, I have been busy informing if it was a good idea to open a Norwegian bank
account (advice from the bank: don’t) and to get myself a Norwegian sim card
for my mobile phone. Especially getting the sim card was really difficult. I
thought. Luckily a friend of mine gave me an advice that there would be a company
that sells sim cards to exchange students at the university this afternoon,
where you won’t need a Norwegian personal number. So I finally have a Norwegian
sim card right now, but I probably won’t be able to use it before tomorrow.
I have been
walking around a lot too. Through the streets here where I live, but also
through the centre (where I got lost of course). The houses here are so
beautiful! It almost seems like I live in an expensive suburb. Yesterday
evening I went to the Mela-festival here (a festival with Indian/Pakistani/Iran
performances and delicious food) with some exchange students I met through
facebook, which was cosy. Now I start to get to know more people, I can
discover Oslo together.
Xxx Veeeeel plezier daar!!
